St Philip's College - Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving Institution

A comprehensive public community college that is located in San Antonio, Texas, in United States, St. Philip's College is a part of the Alamo Community College District. One of the oldest and most diverse community colleges in United States, St Philips College is the only one federally designated as both a historically black colleges and a Hispanic-serving institution.




Campus black colleges

Two major campuses are operated by the college and there are also seven subsidiary campus locations. Presently it serves over 9,000 students. Original campus is located in eastern San Antonio and at around three miles distance from downtown. Southwest campus is located at 800 Quintana Road in western San Antonio. It acts as hub for technical training programs. Other areas that perform as campus are local military installations, hospitals, highs schools, as well as the Central Texas Technology Center that is located in Braunfels. Over 9,800 students attend campus classes.

Unique Features

College campus has a diverse student body with 58% female and 67% employed students. Around 8,300 student purse continuing education while 3000 others carry on with web based education. Nearly 48% of the students have enrolled in applied science and technology majors.

Brief History

James Steptoe Johnston founded the St. Philip's Normal and Industrial School to educated emancipated slaves on March 1 st 1898. It grew to a high school and then to Junior college under Artemisia Bowden, daughter of a former slave who served the college from 1902-1954. In the meantime the school affiliated to San Antonio College in 1942. Opening of Northeast Learning Center in 1996, Leadership Development Center 1997 marked notable events in college history.

Programs Offered

St. Philip's College offers liberal arts and technical courses. Over 70 academic and technical disciplines are there for students to choose from. Major divisions are arts and science, health science, applied science and technology, and continuing education. Associate degrees in all disciplines are offered by the college. Job descriptions for various employments are a part of the continuing education program offered. In addition there are multiple one year certificate programs.
